Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism

The tourism industry is reporting a mixed bag of fortune from increased business to a dramatic downturn. The value of the pound mixed with general economic uncertainty has seen increases in accommodation reservations, while entertaining and eating in the home is blamed for reduced restaurant bookings and weekend breaks. Management teams are faced with changing levels of utilisation, a different mix of business and are struggling to maintain their competitiveness.

Principality Consulting has proven business modeling techniques for the hotel sector that give hotel management a unique view of their business and the options and action plans needed.

The modeling allows management to address the issues that are being faced and identify the opportunities to maximize the return on investment, including:

  • Increasing Sales
  • Reducing Costs
  • Improving Customer Service levels
  • Optimum revenue mix for optimum profitability

This could prove an excellent exercise for organisations looking at applying for the Tourism investment support scheme (TISS)

Principality’s credentials have secured their position on many of the public sector, business support delivery frameworks - including the eBusiness programme and most recently as assessors for the new Accredit UK scheme.

With the tourism sector offering strong potential to generate growth, we were delighted when Information Communication Technology (ICT) support became available for eligible tourism businesses. We successfully undertook the stringent application and are now undertaking health checks of a business’ use of ICT (computers, websites, social media, telephony equipment, etc) – worth over £700 on the open market.

Despite the realisation that technology is an essential component of developing a tourism operation, Gartner research shows IT investment by business generally remains weak with the number of new PCs bought in the UK increasing only 5pc in the last quarter 2010.

Our experience, and evident in a recent project for North Wales firm Country House Weddings, suggests that, whatever the purchase price of new software, a business should anticipate at least matching that figure for the implementation (transfer of data; alignment to other systems, etc) and training to get things up to full efficiency.”

Some of these costs could be partly supported by the Local Investment Fund on offer from local authorities in the Welsh convergence areas; and training on new systems could be considered in the training plans available to businesses via the Workforce Development Fund.

Recognising that large and small companies are wary of the risk of deteriorating trading conditions when identifying what IT investments could be made, Principality Consulting specialises in advice that clearly demonstrates reduced costs. Any tourism business considering investment at this time would be wise to build expert business analysis advice into the business planning to ensure the return on investment is clearly demonstrated from the outset.
